Stronger together – Finland and the world need the UN

A global pandemic, climate crisis, inequality between countries or the risk of nuclear conflict cannot be solved by one country or one region. The UN has the mandate and the ability to unite and support the countries of the world.

UN Association of Finland, UN Women Finland, UNICEF Finland, UN Global Compact Finland, Finnish Refugee Council and the Family Federation of Finland demand that Finland's support for the UN will be continued and strengthened in the next government term.

Almost all countries are members of the UN. The UN is globally the most important actor in humanitarian aid, development and peace, and UN organizations have extensive expertise and presence in crisis and disaster situations, for instance. As crises and disasters become more common, there is an even greater need for the UN.

Finland has been an active supporter of the UN in recent years. Finland’s cooperation and funding will remain crucial for the UN's operation and development. Only by working together with the rest of the world Finland, despite its small size, is able to advance issues that are important to Finnish people, too. During its history, Finland has also received help from the international community. A number of UN organizations and offices operate in Finland, promoting sustainable development, peace and human rights in their daily work.

UN is present:

  • when a crisis or disaster occurs, offering support to those in need.
  • when decisions are made regarding climate, environment and human rights.
  • preparing actions and supporting cooperation to achieve sustainable development.
  • defending the rights of children, women and others in a vulnerable position.
  • building and securing peace in areas affected by conflicts and war.

In 2022:

  • UN country offices promoted the achievement of sustainable development goals in 162 countries
  • UN units, organizations, funds and programs supported humanitarian, development and peace work with around 53 billion euros
  • 174 million people in 60 countries and regions received humanitarian aid organized by the UN
  • UN supported peace building and prevented conflicts through 50 peacekeeping operations
  • UN supported the rehabilitation of 46,000 victims of torture and organized aid for 13,000 victims of modern slavery

Finland and the world need the UN.
